Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology - Engineering Foundations Concentration

an electrical engineering student practicing his work

The Engineering Foundations concentration in Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology provides an entry point into electro-mechanical and automation technologies while developing core technical and problem-solving skills.

Courses in DC and AC electrical circuits, robotic programming, PLC programming, hand tools, and metal fabrication prepare graduates with valuable skills sought by employers for “multi-craft” technician roles. Students gain experience reading blueprints and schematics, programming FANUC and Yaskawa robotic systems, navigating Allen-Bradley hardware and software, using Microsoft Office applications, and maintaining fluid and mechanical systems.

Technical courses incorporate software as an integral engineering tool and emphasize hands-on laboratory experiences aligned with tasks commonly performed in industrial environments. Whenever possible, partnerships with local industry allow students to see firsthand the equipment, processes, and technical skills used daily in the manufacturing sector.

Graduates find career opportunities with a wide variety of regional employers, with opportunities expanding across Ohio — one of the top three manufacturing states in the country. Career pathways include maintenance technician, manufacturing technician, technical sales representative, PLC programmer, and other advanced technical roles.

With multiple courses aligned to Ohio Transfer Assurance Guides (TAGs), graduates also benefit from strong in-state transfer opportunities to bachelor’s degree programs in Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology and related fields.

Combining the mechanical elements with electric power and harnessing it all in a computer to control robotics, build a hybrid car, streamline manufacturing processes, the list could go on and on. You will analyze blueprints, schematics, and diagrams to make the machine come to life in aerospace or at a production site and watch as it improves efficiencies. There is so much that Electromechanical technicians can do, especially when working closely with electrical and mechanical engineers. They were also kids who dreamed of building the toys that sparked their minds. In short, Electromechanical technicians combine mechanical technology knowledge with electrical and electronic circuits knowledge. Operating, testing, and maintaining automated, robotic, or electromechanical equipment.
