Imagination Library of Ohio

By now, you may have heard of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of Ohio (DPIL) and the work being done at the state level – including the executive order relating to Governor DeWine’s Literacy Challenge – to promote this program, which provides a book each month to every child in Ohio until their fifth birthday. If you have a child under age 5, you’re welcome to enroll them here. Once enrolled, children will receive high-quality, age-appropriate books, including The Tale of Peter Rabbit and The Little Engine That Could.

Early reading proficiency increases the likelihood of college attendance. A longitudinal study on third-grade reading proficiency showed that “Fewer than 20 percent of students below grade level in third grade attended college, compared to about a third of students at grade level, and nearly 60 percent of students reading above grade level. Even among high school graduates, almost three-quarters of students who were above-grade-level for reading in third grade attended college, compared to about 55 percent of students in the at-level group and about 40 percent of students in the below-level third-grade group.”
