ITS Update

This a faculty and staff update.  Students received a text notification that classes will resume on Monday, April 5, 2020.

As part of our critical response efforts to the recent cyber security incident, Zane State College has leveraged CrowdStrike’s Falcon platform to secure our campus network endpoints which include; desktop workstations, network servers, and laptop.

What to expect.  Most PCs have received a new installation of Microsoft Windows.  The result means former files on PCs and laptops are no longer available.  When arriving to your office, if you have not reset your password within the past 24 hours you will need to do so first then you will be able to log into your office PC.

Zane State User Accounts:

As part of our critical response efforts all Zane State College user account passwords MUST BE RESET PRIOR TO GAINING ACCESS TO ZANE STATE COLLEGE SYSTEMS, INCLUDING BLACKBOARD.

All users can perform a password reset using the Microsoft Password Reset Tool.  Passwords must be a MINIMUM of 15 characters, requiring a combination of the following rules;

The password contains characters from three of the following categories:

  • Uppercase letters of European languages (A through Z, with diacritic marks, Greek and Cyrillic characters)
  • Lowercase letters of European languages (a through z, sharp-s, with diacritic marks, Greek and Cyrillic characters)
  • Base 10 digits (0 through 9)
  • Non-alphanumeric characters (special characters): (~!@#$%^&*_-+=`|\(){}[]:;”‘<>,.?/) Currency symbols such as the Euro or British Pound aren’t counted as special characters for this policy setting.
  • Any Unicode character that’s categorized as an alphabetic character but isn’t uppercase or lowercase. This group includes Unicode characters from Asian languages.

The Microsoft Password Reset Tool requires users to have alternate methods during the password reset process which include; mobile phone, landline phone or alternate email address other than your Zane State College email address.  If you do not have an alternate validation method you will need to contact ITS on Monday.  The link below will direct you to the reset website.

Email Accounts:

As part of our critical response efforts Zane State College email accounts have been fully scanned and validated for use.  The College has implemented a second layer of email protection through SOPHOS to assist with SPAM and email phishing intrusion.

OneDrive and SharePoint Services Accounts:

As part of our critical response efforts Zane State College OneDrive and SharePoint Services accounts have been fully scanned and validated for use.

Blackboard LMS:

The Blackboard LMS platform connectivity is restored.  Please keep in mind you must perform a password reset as mentioned in section, Zane State User Accounts prior to accessing Blackboard.

MyZSC Website:

The MyZSC website is a work in progress.  This is one of the most customized elements of our environment and as a result this environment sustained significant impact. ITS will continue making updates to content and webservices during the following weeks to ensure content availability.

Collaboration and User Network File Shares:

As part of our critical response efforts the College network file share content continues remediation and restoration efforts.  This appears to be one of the most impacted areas. The ITS department will work to recover available data. It is our hope that through recovery from backup/restore files and use of our email and blackboard systems that the loss of files can be minimized. This process will require methodical efforts and your patience is appreciated.

Print Services

The ITS team will be working with Xerox to re-establish the print services during the following week.

College Owned Laptops or Desktops:

As part of our critical response efforts any faculty or staff member with a College owned laptop or desktop should power off the unit and bring the unit to the ITS department located in College Hall C221.  ITS personnel will install the CrowdStrike Falcon software or re-image the unit.

Campus Telephone Voicemail:

As a result of the cyber security incident the campus telephone voice mail passwords for all employees were reset.  Faculty and staff will need to setup a new voicemail password.  To setup a new pin number, press the voicemail button you your office telephone and follow the prompts.  The default password is 196921.  If you experience, difficulty please reach out to ITS.
