Mechanical Engineering Technology - Engineering Foundations Concentration

Studnets at Zane State talking over a table

The Engineering Foundations concentration in Mechanical Engineering Technology introduces core engineering and manufacturing principles while preparing students for further study in mechanical and related engineering technology fields.

Computer-aided design skills are developed for use in applications such as machine design, tool and die design, and computer-aided machining. Courses in industrial processes — including machining, plastics, metrology, metal fabrication, and project management — prepare graduates with valuable skills for a wide variety of positions within the manufacturing sector.

Graduates develop skills in 3-D modeling and drafting, CAM programming, Microsoft Office applications, fluid and mechanical systems, and analytical design techniques. Technical courses incorporate software as an integral engineering tool and emphasize hands-on laboratory activities aligned with the types of functions performed by graduates in industrial environments.

Whenever possible, partnerships with local industry allow students to gain exposure to the equipment, processes, and technical skills used daily in manufacturing. Graduates find career opportunities with a wide variety of regional employers, with opportunities expanding across Ohio — one of the top three manufacturing states in the United States. Career pathways include roles such as engineering designer, manufacturing technician, technical sales representative, CNC programmer, and related technical positions.

With multiple courses aligned to Ohio Transfer Assurance Guides (TAGs), graduates also benefit from strong in-state transfer opportunities to several bachelor’s degree programs in Mechanical Engineering Technology and related fields.

Coupled with computer-aided drafting, these skills are developed thoroughly for use in machine design, tool, and die design applications. At ZSC, we break this program down to an accessible level for anyone who doesn’t have the slightest idea of what engineering even means while also providing valuable content in computer-aided machining, skilled in CAD drafting, 3-D modeling, machining principles, industrial materials, and processes, and analytical design techniques. Engineering is everywhere you look. Even the most miniature objects have been engineered to a certain degree. It’s about applying your knowledge to a problem and solving it.

Highlights

Aligns with the booming manufacturing industry workforce demand, including site visits & networking opportunities.

Hands-on courses starting in the first semester, incorporating the computer as an engineering tool and practical lab activities that you will utilize in your future with this degree.

Success Stories

A Closer Look

Graduates have found placement to be good in our local service area; however, opportunities are exponentially increasing in larger urban areas such as Columbus. Graduates have been placed with engineering firms, utility companies, and in the public sector, but the majority of graduates obtain positions within the manufacturing industry. Careers in product, tool, machine, and facilities design are prevalent. Positions such as manufacturing technician and process technician are also common. With multiple courses meeting Ohio TAGs (Transfer Assurance Guides), graduates find excellent in-state transfer to four-year bachelor program in Mechanical Engineering Technology as well.
