When you think of occupational therapy, what comes to mind? Is it a dad relearning how to drive so he can pick up his child at school? Or is it a child trying to walk again after recovering from a traumatic brain injury? Or maybe you think of a mental health assessment that helps determine whether a person can independently eat, bathe, and dress daily. All of these — and so much more — describe the Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) field.
Working under the supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist, OTAs bring out the grit and determination of patients of all ages as they learn or regain the ability to have independent and satisfying lives.
As an OTA student at Zane State, the curriculum to enter the field is challenging and rewarding. It combines biological and behavioral sciences in lecture and traditional-style classes over four full-time semesters and one summer session. During your final semester, you will complete your clinical experience, called fieldwork, where you will experience supervised practical experience in a healthcare setting to prepare for the workforce.
Please note this program is a selective health program. This means that once you are accepted to Zane State College, you will need to submit an additional, separate application for this program. The application is open annually from January 4 to March 1 for admission in the following academic year.
The Occupational Therapy Assistant program accepts 20 students and up to 2 alternates each year.

Zane State College Occupational Therapy Assistant Program has an overall graduation rate of 92%
Graduates of the program will be eligible to sit for the National Certification Examination for the occupational therapy assistant, administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) certification as an occupational therapy assistant. After successful completion of this exam, the graduate will be a certified occupational therapy assistant (COTA). In addition, all states require licensure to practice; however, state licensees are usually based on the results of the NBCOT certification examination. States also require certified occupational therapy assistants to complete a licensing process to practice in their respective state. A felony conviction may affect a graduate’s ability to sit for the NBCOT exam or attain state licensure.
