Summer: One Size Does Not Fit All

Daniel Amspaugh
Business Professor
Business Program Director

In our Business programs, we have many students with varying backgrounds in life experiences and academic accomplishments. One student who returned after several years to complete the Real Estate program also wanted to add a general business degree. After looking at her previous completed course work, we worked out an ATS, Associate of Technical Studies, in Marketing to add to her Real Estate degree. She could not finish it in Fall/Spring, so we worked a schedule that allowed her to take one more class over the summer to complete her ATS degree.
Another Business student who had changed majors a couple of times before this year found her career goal in Human Resource Management. To complete in as short of time as possible, she has signed up for two summer classes – Accounting and Biology. Both take some work to complete over the short summer semester, but that will allow her to take four courses in the Fall to complete her HR degree.

Our Pathway to Business program for high school juniors and seniors has traditionally, over the past five years, had 80% of the students take Biology and Critical Thinking over the summer semester. This significantly lightens their course load as seniors in both Fall and Spring semesters to allow them to be very successful here at Zane State and still have time to participate in many high school senior activities.

If you are a student, feel free to talk with your program directors about the next steps for your academic planning … including summer classes! Click here to see all that Zane State College has to offer you this summer.
