The Medical Laboratory Technician Program

Are you drawn to the medical field but would rather work “behind the scenes?” The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program at Zane State College is the ideal degree if you are detail-oriented and enjoy science. The Medical Laboratory Technician Program at Zane State College has a 100% job placement and 100% certification exam passage rate for the year 2019 and a five-year average graduate and employer satisfaction rate of 100 percent.

The median salary for an MLT was $53,040 in Ohio in 2020. MLTs are able to find work almost anywhere, and many employers have career ladders, scholarships, and/or tuition reimbursement. Fully online programs exist to get your bachelor’s degree (MLS) from your MLT

MLTs are an integral part of health care teams. Their primary function is to perform testing on blood and body fluids so that doctors can diagnose patients, treat patients, and assist in disease monitoring and/or prevention. Using both sophisticated instruments and “manual” methods requiring dexterity, MLTs work in many types of labs. Here are laboratory department examples:

Hematology / Coagulation

  • Identify blood cells/ blood cell abnormalities
  • Monitor the effects of “blood thinners”

  • Detect glucose, potassium, ammonia, or sodium levels

Microbiology / Immunology

  • Identify bacteria and viruses
  • Identify which antibiotics will work for a given infection

Transfusion Medicine (“blood bank”)

  • Test patients for their blood type
  • Find compatible blood for transfusions

  • Collect blood from patients
  • Venous and skin puncture techniques

Zane State students gain hands-on laboratory skills both on campus and in hospital learning experiences. During the final semester includes clinical rotations in hospital laboratories. Graduates acquire entry-level skills needed for employment in a clinical laboratory setting. Graduates are also eligible to take the national MLT Board of Certification examination given by The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

The MLT program is fully accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), 5600 N. River Rd., Suite 720, Rosemont, IL 60018-5119, 773.714.8880, www.naacls.org.
