Student Spotlight: Lexi Mercer

Who can relate to this statement?:

“I tried college … then I took a break. As the months passed, it just became harder and harder to make the time to go back. It’s difficult to work and go to school at the same time.”

If this sounds like something you’ve experienced, please take a minute to read Lexi’s story. She returned to college as an adult – and is succeeding through Zane State College’s Adult Evening Business Management Program.

“I received an email at my place of employment about the Business Management Program at Zane State. As I read the email, I also learned about my company’s tuition reimbursement. I thought, ‘why not?,’ and enrolled soon after,” Lexi said.

One of the biggest barriers for adult students is finding that work/life balance. At Zane State, we get that, so we have support in place for our adult students. “Monday is when we have class, and we have all week to get our homework done. I can get it done when I have the time. If I need to do it when everyone goes to bed, then that’s when I can focus. Zane State also has a designated support person, Konrad, to help if we have any questions. Konrad is always there with a response. If he does not know the answer, he will get back to us promptly,” Lexi explained.

Lexi considers the program as training for the career she ultimately wants. She says the small class size is a bonus because it allowed her to form friendships with other adult students who are all working towards the same goal. Lexi also advises those who are interested to check with your employer to make sure all eligibility requirements are in place.

“The process was smooth, and I am feeling empowered more than ever,” Lexi said.

“I am having such a positive experience that after I complete my degree at Zane State, I plan to transfer to Muskingum University for a bachelor’s degree. The sky is the limit!”
