Student types are important for determining eligibility for certain programs, scholarships, and placement in introductory courses.

What Type of Student Are You?

Degree/Certificate Seeking Student

A degree-seeking student is someone who enrolls with the intention of earning a specific academic degree/certificate, such as an associate or bachelor's degree. These students must meet the institution's admission requirements, complete a designated curriculum, and fulfill all the necessary credit and course requirements to graduate. Degree-seeking students are typically eligible for financial aid, scholarships, and other academic resources provided by the institution. Their academic progress is monitored to ensure they meet the criteria for graduation in their chosen field of study.

  • First-Time Freshman Students

    A first-time freshman is a student who is enrolling in a college or university for the first time after completing high school and be degree-seeking.

  • Transfer Students

    A transfer student is someone who has previously attended another college or university after high school graduation. Transfer students typically bring with them credits earned at their previous institution(s), which may be evaluated to determine how many of those credits can be applied toward their degree requirements.

  • Bachelor Students

    Zane State College’s Bachelor of Applied Science – Electrical Engineering Technology (BSET)in Protection and Control program is a completion bachelor’s program. Graduates of an accredited associate degree in an electrical engineering program, with a C grade or better in both Physics I and Pre-Calculus, can apply to BSET. This includes graduates of Zane State College’s  Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology (EEET) program.

College Credit Plus

The College Credit Plus (CCP) Program provides students in grades 7-12 with the opportunity to enroll in college courses, enabling them to earn college credit while meeting high school graduation requirements at the same time.

  • High School Students Wanting to Graduate with a Degree

    Many CCP students complete associate degrees/certificates from Zane State College at the same time they graduate from high school.

  • High School Students Wanting to Continue Their College Education at ZSC

    Upon graduating high school, students who stay at Zane State may be eligible for the CCP Full Tuition Scholarship, in addition to other scholarships.

Re-admitting Student

A re-admitting student is a student who has previously taken classes at Zane State College (ZSC) after graduating high school and has been away from the College for at least one semester, excluding the summer term. These students can be either degree-seeking or non-degree-seeking. Re-admitting students are not required to provide high school transcripts or test scores. However, if they have attended another college or university since their last enrollment at ZSC, they must provide official transcripts from that institution.

Non-Degree Seeking Student

A non-degree-seeking student is someone who enrolls in courses at the College without the intention of earning a degree/certificate from that institution. These students might take classes for personal enrichment, professional development, or to fulfill prerequisites for another college. Non-degree-seeking students do not need to meet the same admission requirements as degree-seeking students, and they are not eligible for financial aid. Their coursework will still be graded and can sometimes be applied toward a degree if they later decide to pursue one.

  • Transient Students

    A transient student is a student who is temporarily enrolled at Zane State College while maintaining primary enrollment at another institution. This type of student typically takes courses at Zane State College for a specific term (such as a summer session) with the intent of transferring those credits back to their home institution to apply toward their degree. They generally must obtain approval from their home institution to ensure that the credits earned will be accepted and count toward their degree requirements.

Special Population

Senior Citizens

In Ohio, senior citizens aged 60 and older have the opportunity to take advantage of a special educational benefit. Ohio residents who are 60 years of age or older can enroll in courses at public colleges and universities across the state and receive up to four credit hours of coursework for free each semester. This program is designed to promote lifelong learning and make higher education more accessible to older adults. Senior Citizens may be responsible for additional fees, but the tuition for up to four credit hours is waived. This initiative allows senior citizens to explore new subjects, stay mentally active, and engage with the academic community. To participate, senior citizens can apply as a degree-seeking or non-degree seeking student.
